Must Have for Novice to Beginner!
I?ll be honest with you, on my top 10 list of favorite things is a good introductory business book. Make it a good introductory business book on social media and you are in the top 5 for sure! Luckily for you and me, Gabriela Taylor?s ?The Ultimate Guide to Building and Marketing your Online Business? is one of those books. Now I teach business and marketing to college students and I?m always looking for a book I can recommend, particularly since so many are hoping to eventually start their own business. In my opinion a good intro book should have the following things:
1. A foundation ? why do business owners and future owners need to know these things
2. Relevant information ? for example relevant sites that actually help business people
3. Useful information ? how to use sites effectively
This book does all three of those things. Gabriela presents a very good case for why businesses need to create an online presence in Chapter One. She quickly launches into a comprehensive list in each chapter of useful sites that can enhance any business, as well as explanations of how to use each one effectively. The chapters on creating a website and web content may be simplistic to those with existing websites but for a new business owner, they are clear and concise. The goldmine comes in the chapter on social media. I personally enjoyed reading over the various sites and tools that Gabriela provides.
I would recommend when you get this book (which you should if you are starting your own business or planning to do so), that you sit down with a note pad so you can write down all the sites/tools you want to use. There is so much information that you can easily forget something if you don?t write it down!
A great introduction & resource list
This is an impressively complete overview of most of the key issues involved in creating and growing an online business, with multiple useful links for every sub-topic.
This isn?t ?complete? in the sense that it provides all the info you?ll need, but instead it provides a relatively complete list of the issues & decisions you?ll need to address.
Each chapter covers many subjects, each of which could be (and mostly are) the subject of other full-length books.
I?ve been advising e-commerce retailers since 1997, and I don?t recall seeing a concise resource this useful. I recommend this book as a starting point for folks considering launching a new online business; it might be even more useful to business owners who?ve already fumbled with online businesses that haven?t gone anywhere.
Of course, I disagree with some of the advice here, and there are a few subjects I didn?t find addressed. But this book is a great starting point, which startups can return to time and again for more tips.
It?s not a perfect book, but it?s an excellent overview of a complex subject.
