SALT LAKE CITY, UT ?? Utah Museum of Contemporary Art announces the opening of traveling exhibition FAX, Guest curated by Jo?o Ribas and co-organized by The Drawing Center and Independent Curators International.? FAX has grown and morphed since it?s opening at The Drawing Center in New York in 2009, and has travelled world-wide, amassing faxes in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. UMOCA hosts a comprehensive presentation of the exhibition, and will open with a First Friday celebration on March 2, 2012, and close June 23, 2012.

?FAX challenges our notion of where an art exhibition can wind up and what form it takes when it gets there. This presentation teleports to the ends of the earth riding on the technological whimsy of this thought-to-be obsolete mode of communication. As an artistic medium, the 500+ artists have created a material legacy that will keep fax machines transmitting for generations to come,? says Aaron Moulton, Senior Curator of Exhibitions, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.

Moulton has added the following artists to FAX: Mike Bouchet, Salotto Buono, Roisin Byrne, Keren Cytter, Sejla Kajmeric, Daniel Kingery, Forniture Pallotta, Bertrand Planes, Jared Steffensen, and Ignacio Uriarte.? Other artists will be added over the course of the exhibition and will be included in future presentations at other institutions world-wide.

FAX invites a multigenerational group of artists, as well as architects, designers, scientists and filmmakers, to re-conceive of the fax machine as a tool for thinking and drawing. Although the technology for transmitting

printed images and texts dates from the nineteenth century?a machine by Scottish mechanic Alexander Bain patented in 1843?it was the introduction of the modern fax through commercially available machines in the 1970s that turned facsimiles into a ubiquitous communications medium for international business. Artists readily exploited its immediate, graphic, and interactive character, making it an important part of the history of media art, nestled between the legacy of Fluxus and the nascent practices of new media. But with the fax machine now fast becoming a technology of the past, how do artists see the potential of the fax transmission today?

Faxes by nearly 100 artists that were sent to the initial showing of FAX at The Drawing Center form the core of the exhibition, including seminal examples of early telecommunications art. Each institution on the tour is encouraged to invite up to twenty additional artists to submit works, which will be presented at all successive venues. These works are transmitted to each participating institution?s working fax line throughout the duration of the exhibition. The active accumulation of information?received in real time, in the exhibition space?includes drawings and texts, and even the inevitable junk faxes from telemarketers and local businesses as well. All the transmitted pages are archived or displayed together with the active fax machine, which may produce new faxes from invited artists at any moment. The result?an ongoing cumulative project?is a show concerned with ideas of reproduction, obsolescence, distribution, and mediation.

Since the first showing of FAX at The Drawing Center, the exhibition has been presented in 14 galleries in Europe, Latin America and Asia, as well as North America, with over 200 artists from all over the world invited to participate by each host curator. At times, the exhibition has also been shown simultaneously, and at one point was even in three different countries: Para/Site Art Center in Hong Kong, Burnaby Art Gallery in British Columbia, and Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City. Recently, FAX was exhibited at the South London Gallery in the U.K. and the Knoxville Museum in Tennessee, where the two institutions had kept in contact throughout the duration of the exhibition. Subsequently, FAX has the ability to explore the potential of simultaneous and real-time exhibitions ? furthering the unlimited possibilities of developing international collaborative exchange.

Ways To Get Good Business PR | Public Relations Insider

February 27th, 2012 Filed under: public relations ? Public Relations Author

The growth of the Internet has had a major impact on the way that businesses relate to their customers. Several decades ago, people were only likely to hear about the experience that close friends and family members had with a company in most cases. It is now the case that anyone who has a strong opinion and access to the Internet can publish their feelings for the entire world to find when they do a web search. This makes it more important than ever to seek out ways to get good?business PR.

One of the big aspects of business PR that is frequently overlooked is the way that a company treats its workers. Many people simply do not feel good about buying from a company that they believe will keep all of the profits while not paying fair wages or providing an appropriate level of benefits. Any company that cares about its image should pay attention to how it is treating employees, and whether they are being given cause to resent their employer. While there will always be an occasional person who simply can not be pleased, if there is a pattern of people with complaints it will drive customers away.

It is surprisingly easy to get good business PR by supporting and participating in the local community. Money that is spent in a way that improves the lives of the people in the community, such as by sponsoring activities for children, adds to the positive image of a company in ways that even the best commercial can not match. It is important, however, to choose what the company is going to sponsor carefully. For example, being the sponsor of an organization that turns out to practice discrimination on the basis of something like race or sexual orientation can quickly turn into a public relations disaster.

In some ways, getting good business PR is easier than it has ever been before. After all, any individual who has a good experience with a business can broadcast their thoughts in a way that could theoretically reach millions of people. The important thing is to look for ways to really give people cause to feel good about being your customer.

Islamic Extremists Storm Pakistan Church, Wound Two Christians

February 24, 2012

A dozen armed Muslims stormed Grace Ministry Church in Faisalabad, Pakistan, seriously wounding two Christians, AsiaNews reports. One man was hit by bullets and is in critical condition in the hospital, possibly requiring the amputation of his arm. Another man was pushed from the roof after being struck repeatedly with a rifle butt. The extremist raid was sparked by charges that the church was trying to evangelize Muslims in an attempt to convert them to Christianity. It has been assaulted several times, and the pastor and his family have received repeated death threats. The police, instead of pursuing the perpetrators, have opened an investigation against the pastor and 20 other church members on allegations of "proselytizing."

Nigeria oil line on fire; militants claim attack

(AP) ? An Eni SpA oil pipeline ruptured and caught fire as a militant group claimed responsibility for an attack in the region, their first alleged assault in months as its purported leader awaits trial on terrorism charges in South Africa.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta also threatened to attack South African interests in an email sent to journalists late Saturday night, as its alleged leader Henry Okah remains imprisoned there.

South African businesses "will pay a heavy price for the interference of (President) Jacob Zuma in the legitimate fight for justice in the Niger Delta, by its people," the statement read. "The South African president has reduced himself to the position of a hired thug."

South African businesses, like mobile phone carrier MTN Group Ltd. and others, have operations throughout Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation with more than 160 million people. While other MEND threats have failed to materialize in the past, Saturday's apparent attack could mean the militant group is willing to begin its assaults again.

The fire happened Saturday night near Brass River in Nigeria's Bayelsa state, home to the nation's President Goodluck Jonathan. Witnesses told a local environmental group they heard the blast from their homes.

In its email, the militant group known by the acronym MEND said it "attacked and destroyed" the pipeline run by a Nigerian subsidiary of Eni.

A Rome-based spokesman for Eni, speaking on condition of anonymity per company policy, acknowledged that either a fire or attack had happened on the pipeline, cutting about 4,000 barrels of crude oil production a day.

Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, a spokesman for the military in the restive region, acknowledged "claims of a fire" on the pipeline, but said soldiers could not independently verify it.

The attack occurred in the oil-rich Niger Delta, where foreign firms have pumped oil out of the country for more than 50 years. Despite the billions of dollars flowing into Nigeria's government, many in the delta remain desperately poor, living in polluted waters without access to proper medical care, an education or work.

In 2006, militants from groups like MEND started a wave of attacks targeting foreign oil companies, including bombing their pipelines, kidnapping their workers and fighting with security forces. That violence ebbed in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program promising ex-fighters monthly payments and job training. However, few in the delta have seen the promised benefits and scattered kidnappings and attacks continue.

MEND itself, once a powerful, media-friendly militant group in the region, has seen its influence wane over the last year. Its largest major confirmed attacks were a dual car bombing in Nigeria's capital Abuja on Oct. 1, 2010, that killed at least 12 people and the November 2010 kidnapping of seven expatriate workers from offshore oil rigs operated by London-based Afren PLC and Exxon Mobil Corp.

After the Abuja bombings, authorities in South Africa arrested Okah on terrorism charges. His trial there is scheduled to begin Oct. 1.

Okah has repeatedly denied being the leader of the militant group, though Nigeria's government has labeled him as a major arms importer to the region. South African prosecutors also have presented evidence in earlier hearings drawn from Okah's diaries and computer correspondence that they said bolstered accusations he masterminded the October bombings.

Muslims to NY attorney general: Investigate NYPD (AP)

NEW YORK ? Thirty-three civil rights groups from around the country complained to the New York attorney general Friday about police documents that showed the New York Police Department recommending increased surveillance of Shiite mosques based solely on their religion.

The letter urged Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to investigate NYPD's surveillance operations, revealed by an Associated Press investigation, which monitored entire neighborhoods and built databases about everyday life in Muslim communities.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have insisted that police only follow legitimate leads and do not conduct preventative surveillance in ethnic communities. A May 2006 report addressed to Kelly, however, recommended increased spying at mosques and an assessment of the region's Palestinian community to look for potential terrorists.

Even before the AP published the document, Kelly was under fire from Muslim groups who were angry that a controversial movie about Muslims, "The Third Jihad," was shown at NYPD training sessions. Kelly appears briefly in the movie.

About 150 protesters gathered near police headquarters Friday to challenge the NYPD's tactics.

"Just the fact of knowing there is someone out there trying to listen to my conversations that can turn me into some kind of criminal, which I'm not, and exploiting my religion, it hurts," said Sondos Alsilwi, an 18-year-old history major at City College.

Schneiderman's office did not immediately have a comment on the letter.

The Obama administration has made fighting homegrown terrorism a focus of its national security strategy but has repeatedly sidestepped questions about whether it endorses the NYPD's tactics. Tom Perez, the U.S. Justice Department's top civil rights prosecutor, has refused to even answer questions about the NYPD.

The 2006 intelligence report, entitled "US-Iran Conflict: The Threat to New York City," made a series of recommendations to Kelly, including: "Expand and focus intelligence collections at Shi'a mosques." It includes a list of mosques and community organizations stretching from southern New Jersey to Connecticut.

The NYPD's operating rules prohibit it from basing investigations on religion. The NYPD also says it follows FBI guidelines, which would prohibit many of the steps recommended in the report.

But the NYPD faces little in the way of oversight when it comes to its intelligence programs. Both the City Council and Congress are kept in the dark about this secretive aspect of the department. Many first learned about the spying programs from news reports.

"The masses of people around this city are fed up with the police," City Councilman Charles Barron told protesters Friday. "Who the hell do they think they are?"

On Thursday, Kelly downplayed the significance of the 2006 document, calling it a "contingency plan" for military conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Such language does not exist anywhere in the document.

Fears of such a conflict were rising again Friday amid concerns in the Middle East that Israel was preparing a military strike on Iran. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that an attack would only hurt the United States.

"A war itself will damage the U.S. 10 times over" in the region, "Khamenei said in a national broadcast Friday.

Iran is a majority Shi'a country, while most Muslims belong to the Sunni sect.

In August, when the AP first reported on the spying operations, Bloomberg said the NYPD doesn't even consider religion as part of its police work.

"We don't stop to think about the religion," he said. "We think about the threats and focus our efforts there."

Bloomberg spokesman Marc LaVorgna would not say whether the mayor still believes that.
