Cardinals look to climb to .500 by beating Browns

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Overtime was Arizona's time ? again.

And it's got the Cardinals at .500 for the first time since the second week of the season.

Patrick Peterson returned a punt 32 yards and John Skelton threw 32 yards to Larry Fitzgerald to set up a 22-yard field goal by Jay Feely that gave the Cardinals a 20-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in their third overtime win in seven games.

Arizona became the ninth team in NFL history to win three overtime games in a season and just the second to win all three at home.

The Cardinals (7-7), winners of six of their last seven, trailed 17-7 entering the fourth quarter. They have been behind in the second half in all seven of their victories.

"We have a flair for dramatics," Fitzgerald said. "Today was kind of typical Cardinals fashion."

By that, he means the offense starts slowly, the defense plays well ? and all heck breaks loose at the finish.

"It wasn't pretty, but we had so many different guys make plays throughout the course of the game, especially in the second half," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "The way our team fights back is really something special. What I told them is their will to win is pretty strong."

The win kept alive Arizona's long-shot hopes for the playoffs.

Both teams were without their starting quarterbacks because of concussions. Skelton, in relief of Kevin Kolb, completed 28 of 36 for 313 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Seneca Wallace, starting for Colt McCoy, was 18 of 31 for 226 yards, including a 76-yard TD play to rookie Greg Little, Cleveland's longest play from scrimmage in four years.

"We had them on their heels and when it gets to that point, it is about not making mistakes," Wallace said, "not turning the ball over and giving them some easy points, and making plays. They played well on defense and made some plays. I need to help us out a lot more and make some more plays for our team."

Little caught five passes for a career-best 131 yards in the Browns' fourth straight loss and seventh in eight games. Peyton Hillis gained a season-high 99 yards on 26 carries for Cleveland (4-10).

Skelton, a second-year pro out of Fordham, improved to 7-2 as a starter, including 4-1 this year. That doesn't count the previous week's 21-19 victory over San Francisco, when he came in after Kolb took a knee to the head on the Cardinals' third play. Todd Heap, sidelined most of the season with hamstring problems, caught seven passes for 69 yards.

Arizona's offense, so slow to start even through the team's recent success, scored the final 13 points of the game.

Skelton completed 5 of 7 for 82 yards in the 11-play, 87-yard drive that culminated in Beanie Wells' 1-yard touchdown run that cut the lead to 17-14 with 8:33 remaining in regulation.

A holding penalty on Cleveland's subsequent kickoff return pinned the Browns to their 10 and O'Brien Schofield got Arizona's first sack of the day on the elusive Wallace to push Cleveland back to its 5. Schofield got through on the next play as well, grabbing Wallace by an ankle and spinning him to the ground as the quarterback lost the ball.

Initially, Wallace was ruled down on the play, but Whisenhunt challenged and the call was reversed. Replays showed the ball coming loose well before Wallace fell backward onto the turf. The Cardinals took over at the Cleveland 5 needing only to punch it in to take the lead.

But Jabaal Sheard got his second sack, and Cleveland's fourth of the game and Arizona settled for Feely's 33-yard field goal that tied it at 17 with 5:40 to play.

Cleveland won the coin toss to get the ball first in overtime, but the Browns managed only one first down before having to punt. Brad Maynard had artfully kicked the ball away from Peterson, the spectacular rookie whose four punt returns for scores have tied an NFL record.

"I thought we did a very nice job, even on that last punt," Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur said. "We had a guy down in his face and you know we were trying to kick the ball out of bounds or try to pin him down there and the guy in his face thought he saw the fair catch."

He doesn't know Peterson very well, then. The rookie disdains the fair catch, especially with the game on the line.

He fielded it near his left sideline and ran across the field before making a run for it near the right sideline. He took it to the Cleveland 40 and, two plays later, Skelton found Fitzgerald, more open than he'd been all day, far downfield.

"We'd been running crossing patterns all day," Skelton said. "I think the last two drives, when we were in two-minute mode, we ran probably three or four of them, so they expected the same thing. ... Larry just made a good fake, a good cut, and we were able to get down there and let Jay do the rest."

Feely who booted in the chip shot to give Arizona another OT triumph and make Whisenhunt the franchise's winningest coach with 43 wins.

Two weeks earlier, the Cardinals beat Dallas 19-13 in overtime. The first OT victory was 19-13 over St. Louis on Nov. 6. Cleveland played its first overtime game since a 26-20 loss to the New York Jets on Nov. 14 of last year.

Wallace evaded Arizona's rush much of the game. On the Browns' big play, he scrambled away from the blitz to his right and spotted Little in a one-on-one mismatch with linebacker Daryl Washington. The rookie receiver hauled in the pass and easily outran his pursuer for the touchdown that put the Browns up 17-7 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.

Cleveland took the opening kickoff and powered down the field behind Hillis, who scored on a 1-yard run. Phil Dawson's 44-yard field goal made it 10-0 in the second quarter.

With a no-huddle offense, Arizona went 65 yards in 90 seconds in the waning moments of the first half, Skelton hitting Andre Roberts with a 9-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 10-7 with 19 seconds to go.

Notes: Little's TD catch was his 55th reception of the season, surpassing Eric Metcalf for second-most by a Browns rookie. Kevin Johnson has the team's rookie record with 66 in 1999. ... Cleveland lost three players ? LB Titus Brown (knee), WR Jordan Norwood (concussion) and LB Ben Jacobs (concussion).

France hands Carlos the Jackal another life prison term (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? A French court sentenced flamboyant Marxist militant Carlos the Jackal to another life prison term on Thursday for bomb attacks that killed 11 people nearly three decades ago.

The Venezuelan defendant, 62, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, has been locked up in France for almost 20 years serving a life sentence in a separate case for killing two police officers and an informant in Paris in 1975.

Sentencing Ramirez to an additional life term, the special terrorism court in Paris made up of seven magistrates said he should serve a minimum of 18 years in jail.

The verdict could push back the date on which he can apply for conditional release, currently set for 2012.

Defense lawyers called the decision a scandal and said their client would file an appeal.

Ramirez was accused of masterminding four separate attacks in France on two trains, a train station and a Paris street that killed 11 people and wounded nearly 200.

Prosecutors said the bombings were his answer to the police seizure of two of his gang, including his lover, and had argued that he remained a danger to the public.

Earlier on Thursday, Ramirez - once one of the most wanted international criminals - addressed the court in a five-hour monologue, alternately rambling, vitriolic and poignant, calling himself a "living martyr" in defending his innocence.

Ramirez, a self-dubbed "elite gunman," appeared resigned to a guilty verdict. Death in prison, he said at one point, "is the role of a revolutionary."

"I am in prison ... condemned in a pre-decided case," he told the court, his voice rising in volume.

SHADES OF CHE GUEVARA

Ramirez, a colorful figure recognizable at the height of his fame by his Che Guevara-style beret, sunglasses and Havana cigars, sealed his notoriety in a bloody hostage-taking of OPEC oil ministers in 1975.

During the Cold War he received backing from Soviet bloc and Middle Eastern countries, staging attacks throughout Europe for more than two decades before being captured in Sudan in 1994.

During the six-week trial, Ramirez appeared more like a master of ceremonies than a defendant, talking over speakers, interrupting judges, correcting lawyers and occasionally beaming benevolently from his caged-in defendant's box.

He denied any specific involvement in the four bombings in 1982 and 1983 on a Paris street, two trains and a Marseille train station that wounded nearly 200 people and left 11 dead. Prosecutors say the bombings were Ramirez's answer to the police seizure of two of his gang, including his lover.

"There is nothing ... to connect me with these four attacks," he told the court, making a zero sign with his thumb and index finger.

Like a modern-day Scheherazade, Ramirez wove story after story, often smiling and waxing nostalgic about former comrades, and sometimes turning fiery to rail at the system.

His unrelenting discourse touched on a variety of topics, from prison life to Zionist strategy, Soviet passports, the French state, hashish and even the death penalty.

Ramirez broke down, his powerful voice wavering when, at the end of his speech, he read from what he said was the last will of fallen Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"I will continue the fight," he read from the text, before breaking off, overcome with emotion. A group of about a dozen youths in the courtroom audience raised their fists in the air, shouting encouragement at Ramirez.

"Salam Alaikum," or "Peace be with you," said Ramirez, who converted to Islam while in prison, before giving a final fist in the air to the crowd.

MAN OF COMBAT

Accused of being a gun-for-hire by his opponents, and a cold-blooded killer by a former cohort turned witness against him, Ramirez introduced himself on the first day of the trial as "a revolutionary by profession."

Casting himself as a convenient scapegoat, he questioned why no one had ever been arrested in France for the attacks. He and his lawyers said the evidence in the case was based on unreliable witnesses and photocopies of documents from Eastern European secret service archives.

Clearly enjoying the limelight, Ramirez displayed a fondness for name-dropping, variously citing a cast of historical and modern-day heads of state from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Soviet leader Stalin to former French president Jacques Chirac, mentioning the latter's guilty verdict given in the same courthouse earlier in the day.

He explained to the court the proper way to load a 9-millimeter pistol, correcting a prosecutor's knowledge of how many bullets such a gun holds.

"You really aren't a man of combat," he told him.

Prosecutors had argued Ramirez remains a public danger and demanded he be sentenced to an additional life term and serve a minimum of 18 years.

US returns stolen Saddam Hussein plates to Iraq (AP)

NEW YORK ? Authorities in New York City say the United States is giving the Iraqi government stolen dinnerware once used by Saddam Hussein.

Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that stolen china that belonged to King Faisal II also was turned over to Iraqi diplomats.

U.S. authorities had learned in November that the items had been smuggled into the country and sold on eBay to an art group in New York City.

The group had been using some of the plates in an art exhibit. It agreed to voluntarily turn over the items to the U.S. government to be returned to Iraq.

The Iraq dictator was captured by U.S. forces in 2003 and executed in 2006.

It's art, baby: cover your walls in discarded QWERTY keys

Have you ever looked at your bedroom wall and felt that it was a few thousand keys short of the perfect decoration? This is the thought process of artist Sarah Frost, who has taken plethoras of keys from discarded QWERTY keyboards and covered walls with them. The masterpieces range in size from a single wall to entire rooms, consisting of parts procured from sources like individual homes, small businesses, government offices and Fortune 500 companies. Check out her website below for more information, or feel free to gaze upon one of these walls-o'-keys in person at the James Hotel at the James Hotel on Grand Street in New York City, where a permanent installation has been set up. Rent and the Statue of Liberty be damned, we know this is why you're pining to go to the Big Apple in the first place, right?

2 more years of house arrest for anti-Chavez judge (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan authorities on Tuesday extended house arrest for a judge whose case has been strongly criticized by human rights groups.

Judge Ali Fabricio Paredes ruled that his colleague, Maria Lourdes Afiuni, must remain under house arrest for two more years, saying she has intentionally delayed her own trial by repeatedly refusing to enter a courtroom.

Afiuni faces corruption charges that were filed after she released a banker from jail while he awaited trail on accusations of violating foreign exchange controls.

Attorney General Luisa Ortega announced last week that she would ask a judge to extend Afiuni's house arrest.

Afiuni's relatives argued that the order keeping her under house arrest should be rescinded.

Government opponents, joined by some human rights groups, say Afiuni's case shows President Hugo Chavez's influence over Venezuela's judicial system ? a claim that Chavez denies.

One of Afiuni's lawyers, Jose Amalio Graterol, told Union Radio that the judge's legal representatives would appeal the ruling.

"Today's decision constitutes another blow to the rule of law in our country," Graterol said.

Afiuni's brother, Nelson Afiuni, said relatives did not expect a favorable outcome of the appeal.

"We don't expect much because this country's justice system is biased," he said during a telephone interview. "Most prosecutors and judges respond to the interests of the government, and it's clear the government wants my sister to remain isolated."

The judge infuriated Chavez when she freed the banker from prison where he was awaiting trial on charges of flouting the country's currency exchange controls.

Afiuni was arrested after she released banker Eligio Cedeno, who had been in jail awaiting trial on charges of violating currency controls. Cedeno fled the country shortly following his release.

A day after her arrest, Chavez said on national TV that he had discussed Afiuni's actions with the president of the Supreme Court.

Chavez vehemently denies the charges of interference, while human rights activists say Afiuni's case stands out because she is being prosecuted for a routine ruling and because Chavez intervened.

Amnesty International, joined by several Venezuelan rights groups, is demanding her release.
