Saudi restoration commemorates pact of princes, clerics

RIYADH (Reuters) - Climb the rickety ladder through the Emir Omar bin Saud Palace courtyard in crumbling Diriyah and the image of old Saudi Arabia suddenly appears in an adobe roofscape set against dark green palms.

The caramel tones of the mud walls, the smell of dust mingling with water and the muffled clanging of hammer on stone belong not to the kingdom's impoverished past, however, but a restoration project costing at least $133 million.

It was in Diriyah that the ruling al-Saud family first rose to power, and in memorializing its ruins, the authorities are celebrating a telling of national history that puts the dynasty and its clerical allies front and centre.

As capital of the first state built by the al-Saud in alliance with the revivalist cleric Mohammed ibn Abd al-Wahhab around 270 years ago, Diriyah is the Saudi Camelot.

"Diriyah is symbolic. It's about going back to your roots. The whole idea of the Saudi state started in Diriyah," said Khaled al-Dakhil, a political science professor in Riyadh.

In school text books, national day posters and programs on state television, the alliance and its revival under the modern kingdom's founder Abdulaziz ibn Saud is portrayed as delivering the nation from centuries of infighting and superstition and bringing unity, religious enlightenment and oil wealth.

It's a version of events that, while perhaps not applauded by some critics of the government and people from parts of the country that were conquered by the al-Saud, nevertheless has solid roots in history.

The partnership of princes and clerics survived Ottoman invasion, tribal feuding and a transformative oil boom to become the political fulcrum of a country many times larger than the remote desert emirate it succeeded.

LIGHT TOUCH

While the al-Saud and their Wahhabi creed gained recognition and influence internationally, Diriyah fell to ruin.

By the early nineteenth century, it was the largest town of the central Arabian Peninsula, its stout walls enfolding grand palaces for its princes, a treasury, a bath house and a large mosque.

But it was bombarded and burnt to the ground in 1818 by the cannons of an Ottoman army sent to crush Wahhabi fighters who had captured Mecca and Medina and raided southern Iraq.

Its wells were filled up and its palms cut down. Every archaeological dig uncovers a layer of ash, said Ali al-Moghanam, a historian working as an adviser on the project for the government body carrying it out.

The Saudi family and its followers trudged a few miles down Wadi Hanifa to resettle at Riyadh and Diriyah slowly melted into the desert. Today it is almost a suburb of northwest Riyadh.

Behind the ruins are a large pit where workers are making some of the one million mud bricks needed for the project. UNESCO accorded Diriyah world heritage status in 2010.

"Authenticity is very important to UNESCO - making sure the modern intervention is well marked," said Thomas Ciolek, senior project manager on Diriyah for the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), the government's overseeing body.

The restorers envisage that Diriyah will become an open-air museum, with elevated steel walkways that will guide visitors through the shaded alleyways and towering palace walls that survived the Ottomans.

Abdullah Arrukban, director of urban development at the ADA, was not able to say exactly how much the restoration cost, but estimated that it was more than 500 million rials ($133 million).

Ruins have been strengthened with internal titanium rods and freshly plastered using traditional methods, but have not been rebuilt, retaining the jagged silhouettes moulded by cannon shot and centuries of erosion.

When the project is complete - probably in early 2015 - it will use exhibits to detail the political history of the first Saudi state and its destruction, and of the life or normal people before the oil boom.

"It is important to make Saudis aware of their history and proud of their history," said Ciolek.

NATIONAL IDENTITY

From the replastered and crenellated walls of old Diriyah, visitors can clearly see the 99-storey Kingdom Tower in central Riyadh, built by a billionaire prince and direct descendent of the old town's original rulers.

Modern Saudi Arabia is a nearly absolute monarchy, with no national elections or political parties. The al-Saud family hold most top government positions, ruling with the backing of Wahhabi clerics.

Senior clerics and big religious institutions are lavishly financed by the state, spreading Abd al-Wahhab's message across the world.

The clerics describe their movement as "reformist", and those reforms will also be memorialized in a large exhibit in restored Diriyah.

"It's not only a local reform movement. This is for the Muslim countries. The reform movement is to free people in their faith. To make people more than they are," said the historian, Moghanam.

For Saudi critics and some people outside Najd, the arid central part of the Arabian Peninsula where Diriyah is situated, the careful preservation of these ruins is starkly contrasted to the treatment of other parts of the kingdom's heritage.

Some historic buildings in Mecca, for example, which was conquered by the al-Saud in 1924, have been allowed to decline or even in some cases been razed to make way for modern buildings.

"This historical focus undermines two important dimensions: first the contribution of many people in Saudi Arabia towards this state project, and also the role of conquest in it," said Madawi al-Rasheed, the author of "A History of Saudi Arabia" and a critic of the government at London's King's College university.

Some other Saudis say the fact that Diriyah is still relevant to the modern kingdom underscores a divergence between the comparatively rapid pace of social and economic change and the much slower rate of political reform.

"Diriyah for the population does not seem to be very long ago, even though it's 250 years. That's because the relationship between the people and the ruling family didn't change very much. But this idea of government cannot remain because society itself has changed," said Dakhil, the political scientist.

NYC auction offers 125 meteorites for sale

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City auction will offer 125 meteorites for sale, including a large chunk of the moon and a 179-pound iron cosmic rock that evokes Edvard Munch's iconic painting "The Scream."

The sale, one of the largest of its kind, is being held by the Dallas-based Heritage Auctions on Oct. 14.

The sale also includes a large piece of the Peekskill meteorite, famous for puncturing a Chevy Malibu in 1992 about 50 miles north of Manhattan, and the largest complete slice of the most famous meteorite in the world, the Willamette, a huge specimen that is housed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

The moon rock has the highest pre-sale estimate of $340,000 to $380,000; less than 0.1 percent of all meteorites recovered are lunar in origin. The 18-inch-tall meteorite, dubbed "The Scream," is estimated at $175,000 to $225,000.

"When I first saw this meteorite, I saw the resemblance in a heartbeat," said Darryl Pitt, who has consigned the piece to the auction. "It is sculpted in part by atmospheric entry and most significantly by its exposure to the elements on earth over millennia."

Three of the concave hallows are evocative of Munch's image of a man holding his head and screaming under a streaked sky. It is classified a Gibeon and was discovered in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa.

More than half of the meteorites in the sale come from the Macovich collection, the world's largest grouping of aesthetic iron meteorites ? specimens that are considered desirable for display.

Specimens from the collection are found at the natural history museums in London, New York and Paris and The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., among others. Its principal owner is Pitt, who said that 20 years ago all meteorites were selling for the same price irrespective of their aesthetic attributes.

"That has radically changed with the introduction of the first natural history auction in the mid-1990s," he said in an interview. "I was on a mission to popularize meteorites. I knew that the only way I would be able to attract interest on the part of the public was to offer objects that were more visually captivating."

"The overwhelming majority of meteorites are not aesthetic," he said.

The cover lot in the sale is of an iron meteorite with naturally formed holes that resemble a mask. The catalog says it is "arguably the most exotically aesthetic" and was discovered by indigenous tribesmen in Namibia with a metal detector. It is estimated to bring $140,000 to $180,000.

The Peekskill piece has a pre-sale estimate of $47,500 to $55,000.

There are others that have lower estimates but come with interesting stories, like a small portion of a meteorite estimated at about $4,000 that fell from the sky in 1492. It was later chained up in a church so it couldn't fly back into orbit.

Meteorite prices today depend on many variables. But there are two main markets: one of aesthetic iron meteorites and the other is of samples whose value is predicated on attributes other than aesthetics, like a piece of the planet Mars.

About two dozen of the meteorites in the sale have museum provenance and have no reserve.

"The point is I wanted to create a sale that had something for everyone," Pitt said.

BlackRock raises S&P 500 target, but says rally over

NEW YORK (Reuters) - BlackRock Inc , one of the world's largest asset managers, has raised its expectations for the U.S. stock market in 2012 but believes this year's equity rally has run its course, according to targets provided by the firm on Tuesday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> will finish 2012 at 1,450 and rise to 1,525 by mid-2013, according to Chris Leavy, BlackRock's chief investment officer, fundamental equities of the Americas.

The new targets are up from the firm's earlier forecasts and reflect a 7 percent rally in the benchmark index since early August. Earlier, the firm projected the S&P 500 would finish the year at 1,350 and rise to 1,400 by mid-2013.

BlackRock provided the targets to Reuters, which is releasing its broad global equity poll on Wednesday.

The firm had assets under management of about $3.56 trillion on June 30, including $297 billion in equities under management.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the S&P 500 was down 0.5 percent at around 1,450, where BlackRock says it will finish the year, but 4.8 percent below its target for mid-2013. The index reversed earlier gains around midday after BlackRock updated its targets.

The new targets are the first from Leavy, who took over management of the firm's large-cap series funds in June from Bob Doll, the firm's chief equity strategist. Doll, a 30-year industry veteran, is in the process of retiring from the firm. Leavy has already taken over responsibility for the firm's large-cap series funds.

Leavy was not immediately available for comment.

floors, counters, ceramic, and metal appliances can all benefit from a wipedown with vinegar to keep
them clean and polished. Heavier concentrations can be useful for locations like shower tile, where the
acidic vinegar can be used to remove scale from hard water.

For slow or smelly drains, pour vinegar down the drain and flush with hot water. You can also make
a more aggressive drain deodorizer by pouring a mix of baking soda and vinegar down the drain to
agitate material caught on the walls of the pipe, flushing it out to leave the drain smelling more fresh
and moving more quickly.

Stains also tend to be very responsive to vinegar. For marks including stains from pens (beware: vinegar does not always work for ink stains), mildew, glues, and gums in carpeting, on walls, and on furniture, try blotting with vinegar and a clean cloth to gently remove the mark. The fresher the stain, the more successful you will be. On clothing, many stains including tough red wine and other bold colors can be eradicated if they?re blotted with vinegar within 24 hours. Adding a cup of vinegar to the last rinse on the laundry can help if clothes have been emerging stiff and scratchy. The vinegar cuts through soaps and hard water to flush them out of fabric, making it soft and smooth. This is especially useful for baby clothes, which can irritate sensitive skin if not thoroughly
rinsed. The vinegar also acts as a deodorizer, a concern with gym equipment and other heavily soiled
laundry.

For people with hard water or hair that?s accumulating residue from soaps, try rinsing with vinegar and
cool water at the end of a shower to help the hair stay soft and shiny. Vinegar can also be blotted on
itchy or sunburned skin to soothe it, and it can be effective for insect stings as well. If you?re working
in a smoky environment or around foods like onions, try wearing a rag soaked in vinegar over your
nose and mouth to help yourself breathe more easily. Vinegar can also be used to flush the eyes if
they?re red and irritated, but if the irritation persists for more than a day, consult a doctor!

There are even uses for vinegar outdoors! If you have a patio or walkway that?s getting slippery with
moss in winter or has a lot of weeds, use straight vinegar and a scrub brush to clean it and scour the

All that I plant each year now are basil, rosemary (a perennial in some areas) and cilantro.

Avocado, Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil Pasta Salad with Pine Nuts

A Caprese salad with even more...add avocado, pine nuts and some bowtie pasta...a perfect side dish.

Ingredients

Salad:

• 1 lb pasta bows (yes, you could substitute, but so pretty and just perfect for this dish!)
• 6 ripe tomatoes, sliced thin
• 1/2 lb. mozzarella cheese, sliced into thin rounds
• 2 medium, ripe avocados, halved and sliced lengthwise
• 3 Tbsp pine nuts, toasted
• 1 sprig fresh basil for garnish
• Salt and Pepper

Dressing

• 9 Tbsp olive oil
• 3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
• 1 1/2 tsp wine vinegar
• 1 1/2 tsp whole grain mustard
• pinch of sugar
• salt and pepper
• 3 Tbsp chopped fresh basil

Preparation

1. Cook pasta according to package directions.
2. Whisk the dressing ingredients together in small bowl, mix enough with pasta to thoroughly moisten; salt and pepper to taste.

New SARS-like virus detected in Middle East

LONDON (AP) ? Global health officials are closely monitoring a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left a Qatari citizen in critical condition in London.

The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.

In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.

WHO said virus samples from the patient are almost identical to those of a 60-year-old Saudi national who died earlier this year. The agency isn't currently recommending travel restrictions and said the source of infection remains unknown. Still, the situation has raised concerns ahead of next month's annual Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions of people to Saudi Arabia from around the world.

Health officials don't know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people. SARS, which first jumped to humans from civet cats in China, hit more than 30 countries worldwide after spreading from Hong Kong.

"It's still (in the) very early days," said Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman. "At the moment, we have two sporadic cases and there are still a lot of holes to be filled in."

He added it was unclear how the virus spreads. Coronaviruses are typically spread in the air but Hartl said scientists were considering the possibility that the patients were infected directly by animals. He said there was no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission.

"All possible avenues of infection are being explored right now," he said.

No other countries have so far reported any similar cases to WHO, he said, and so far there is no connection between the cases except for a history of travel in Saudi Arabia.

Hartl said the first patient may have had an underlying condition but it probably didn't make him more susceptible to catching the virus.

Other experts said it was unclear how dangerous the virus is.

"We don't know if this is going to turn into another SARS or if it will disappear into nothing," said Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota. He said it was crucial to determine the ratio of severe to mild cases.

Osterholm said it was worrying that at least one person with the disease had died. "You don't die from the common cold," he said. "This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS," which killed about 10 percent of the people it infected.

Britain's Health Protection Agency and WHO said in statements that the 49-year-old Qatari national became ill on Sept. 3, having previously traveled to Saudi Arabia. He was transferred from Qatar to Britain on Sept. 11 and is being treated in an intensive care unit at a London hospital for problems including kidney failure. Respiratory viruses aren't usually known to cause serious kidney problems.

In Qatar, Mohammed bin Hamid Al Thani of the Public Health Department said the patient was in Saudi Arabia for Ramadan during the summer and fell ill after returning to Qatar. Doctors could not immediately identify the virus and decided he should be treated in London.

A public health official, Abdullakef al-Khal, said there is no indication that the patient's family or others were infected.

"There is no special alert for now," he said. "We are being vigilant."

David Heymann, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said the new virus didn't appear that similar to SARS.

"It isn't as lethal as SARS and we don't know too much about its transmissibility yet," he said. "If people are getting infected, they aren't getting serious disease."

Heymann said none of the health workers involved in treating the Qatari patient had fallen ill.

Saudi officials said they were concerned that the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage next month could provide more opportunities for the virus to spread. They advised pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

The Hajj has previously sparked outbreaks of diseases including the flu, meningitis and polio.

Well, it took a few years, but UFC president Dana White (Pictured) has finally decided to badmouth Bellator Fighting Championships, his biggest stateside rival.

While most competitors enter his crosshairs rather quickly, Bellator has managed to fly under White?s radar since hitting the mixed martial arts scene in 2008. However, it appears the fine print in Bellator?s fighter contracts has forced White to unload.

?I don?t talk much about Bellator, but what they do is one of the dirtiest things you can do in the business,? White stated following UFC 152?s post-fight press conference. ?It?s dirty, it?s grimy, and it?s just despicable. Polyamory: An Objective and Analytical Look (Toronto Globe and Mail)

While statistics are?difficult to gather, ?polyamory ?does not go totally unnoticed, especially in overseas Christian Right propaganda. On Family First?s website, the New Zealand Christian Right pressure group was shocked to see a? tripartite? ??civil union???which had no constitutional or legal status between a man and two women sparked in Brazil in August 2o12.??One conservative lawyer told?? the BBC that it was ?something completely unacceptable, which goes against Brazilian values and morals.?

Meanwhile,? Rick Santorum, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and other tiresome ?US social conservative demagogues have??included??polygamy and?polyamory? ?as? inevitable ?moral perversions? that would follow introduction of same-sex marriage ,?either with or without pedophilia, ?incest and bestiality.

Unexpectedly though, US popular culture seems to be evolving toward inclusion on the issue of polyamory. During the course of this year, US ?Showtime cable channel?s series Polyamory: Married and Dating aroused keen interest.? Also screening on Canada?s Movie Network pay channel,?the??seven episode -series? follows the lives of ?two polyamorous families. One is a two-female, one-male ?triad? of graduate students in Riverside, California, while the other is? a ?quad? of two married couples?who live ?together in San Diego.?The triad?s members are?bisexual, while the men within??the quad are straight but the women are bisexual and are emotionally and sexually involved with each other. There are graphic group-sex scenes included within the series.

The Showtime series marks a step toward?mainstreaming ?polyamory ? and a new spin to the debate over whether marriages should only involve a single man and woman.? Montreal?s Natalia Garcia is the show?s executive producer: ?I made this show for monogamous, mainstream people who are in traditional relationships, who don?t know they have an option, who feel like they?re stuck ? or they?re cheating secretly or they?re about to break up. Why is it that we can only marry one person if we love multiple people? Who decided that??

Polyamory (or ethical non-monogamy) is the current incarnation of an egalitarian non-monogamous western subculture whose roots extend from nineteenth-century utopian communes to 1960s ?free love,? 1970s ?swinger? straight ?lifestyles and open marriages and BDSM communities within the 1990s.?Unlike seventies swingers, though, polyamory emphasizes transparency and emotional commitment to all romantic and sexual partners through polyfidelity.?Furthermore,?it is not uncommon for?partners in a ?poly? family?to cohabit or raise children.

Books like Opening Up and The Ethical Slut advocate polyamory and it has also been endorsed by public figures such as US gay sex columnist Dan Savage and British actress Tilda Swinton.

Back in ?December 2011, polyamory earned some legal recognition within Canada after?the British Columbian?Supreme Court?accepted ?that multiple conjugal unions between?cohabiting partners are legal as long as there is no formal ceremonial recognition as there are within monogamous straight, lesbian and gay same-sex marriages.

Polyamory is quite distinctive from the misogynist and patriarchal, polygamous marriages familiar from fundamentalist?schismatic sects that broke with the mainstream Church of the?Latter Day Saints when the latter abandoned polygamy in 1890?(as portrayed within US television series such as? Big Love or Sister Wives) and some other religious sects. In polyamory?s most common form,?whether straight, bisexual, lesbian or gay, ?women and men alike can seek multiple relationships, without formal marital recognition or ceremonies.

In Atlanta, Elisabeth Sheff, a sociologist, has studied polyamorous families in detail since the nineties.Within polyamorous relationships,?female participants?share sexual power more equally with men ?? because women?value interpersonal relationships and emotional contact with their ?sexual partners, and find new ones more easily, which gives them leverage within their relationships.

Earlier this year, Canadian Simon Fraser sociologist Melissa Mitchell carried out an Internet survey of 1,100 polyamorists ? the largest academic survey of polyamorists to date. She found that most?polyamorist individuals (64 per cent) have two partners. Sixty one?per cent of the women identified their two closest partners as both men and?eighty six ?per cent of men identified their two closest partners as both women.

Most of the women in the sample identified as bisexual (at sixty-eight?per cent), while bisexual men were less frequent (only thirty nine?per cent) and exclusive?lesbians or gay men?were rare (only four percent?identified as lesbians and three percent identified as gay? men).

Polyamorists spend more time with and feel more committed to their primary partners than their secondary partners, according to Sheff?s survey. However,? they may also find that secondary partners are more amenable to their sexual needs. Seventy per cent of the sample live with their primary partner and?forty-seven per cent are married to?them. The average relationship?duration was nine years for?primary partners and?three years for secondary partners.

The?Canadian survey is self-selected, so it? cannot provide a representative sample, but Sheff says the Simon Fraser University ?results line up with those of other studies, such as?seventy-one focus group?interviews that she?made with Midwestern and Californian polyamorists over a thirteen year period (1996-2009). Sheff also notes that despite the?importance of?feminism?to polyamorists, it?s not unusual for?straight men to become involved?because they believe that it will lead to ?easy sex? or sex with more than one woman. However, straight or bisexual?male swingers tend to ?have a difficult time meeting the emotional demands of? polyamory and are either? turned off ? or ostracised ? by polyfidelity as a social norm within polyamorous relationships

?Ongoing poly relationships can be enough of a challenge, and require so much communication, that there is often less sex than talking. If the men come in thinking, ?This is going to be a big free-for-all,? and they?re not willing to put in the effort to maintaining the relationship part of it, they get a bad reputation.?

Polyamory: Married and Dating?demonstrates that the?advantages of?such relationships come at a price. Although the members of the cast have considerable sex, they spend much more time in discussion of ethics, ?emotions and debates over each? participant?s rights and responsibilities.

In polyamorist relationships, common?monogamous spousal dilemmas can result in particularly thorny dilemmas for?participants, particularly if the community norm of polyfidelity has been implied to be infringed.??Ms. Garcia, the producer, elaborated that ?Truthfully, poly doesn?t work for everyone, the way monogamy doesn?t work for everyone. To claim that polyamorous families don?t argue and everything is perfect would be a lie.?

Within the online polyamorist community?websites Modern Poly and Polyamory in the News, some views are negative- the programme is viewed exploitative and oversexualised. However, ?others are just happy to have representation of their relationship option within mainstream media.

The cast of Polyamory? resembles the population of the?polyamorist subculture. According to a growing body of research, the community?consists of?white professionals and college students. Ninety per cent of the respondents to Ms. Mitchell?s study were Caucasian-identified, and ninety-five per cent had some access to higher education. Amongst Sheff?s interview participants,?eighty-nine per cent were white,?three-quarters? were in professional?employment and two-thirds had at least a bachelor?s degree.

According to a ?2011 polyamorist ?literature survey by Sheff and Corie Hammers, racial and class data on polyamorists and related groups?was compiled from thirty six?independent studies, and confirmed that sexual minorities?largely consist of ?upper-middle-class Caucasians. Sheff concludes?that lower socio-economic class?individuals and people of colour cannot usually? afford to take the risks associated with defying social norms, which could lead to employment, accomodation, parental or other forms of discrimination against polyamorists, given that legal protection is particularly scarce for polyamorists. This provides community participation advantages for those with the financial resources to hire legal assistance.

Authors of polyamorist self-help literature?view ?it as a ?choice? that?is reliant ?on ethical conviction, hard relationship maintenance?work and personal?endurance, rather than security conferred through relative affluence. Sheff notes that polyamorists don?t tend to discuss class or ethnicity within their ethical debates about their relationship option:

?It?s easy to cast as a personal choice if that?s all it seems to you, devoid of social and political context. But some people can?t ignore that context.?

On the other hand, some individuals and families?may?participate covertly within? non-monogamous relationships, but?refuse to consider??coming out? and adopting an identity that could lead to further stigmatisation or experiences of discrimination. This is one of the reasons it is hard to estimate the scale of the US polyamorist community? researchers are unsure about operational definitions in this context.

Sheff advocates more openness, arguing?that ?public role models, like those?within Polyamory: Married and Dating, may help to destigmatize polyamory and decrease its risks for more marginal potential participants.

Denny Hamlin has had the fastest car in New Hampshire all weekend during practice for the second race in NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup.

He's moved pretty quickly in reverse, too.

Shortly after backtracking from a tweet in which he seemed to guarantee a victory, Hamlin went out for qualifying with the wrong pressure in his tires. Although that left him 32nd in Sunday's starting grid, Hamlin tried to sound positive about the second gaffe by his Joe Gibbs Racing crew in the first two weeks of the Chase.

''If there was nothing wrong, then I would really be shaking my head,'' he said. ''At least we identified what the problem was.''

Tied with Brad Keselowski for the season victory lead with four, Hamlin is fourth in the points race after running out of gas and finishing 16th because his gas man failed to fill up the tank on the final pit stop in the Chase opener in Chicago. Hamlin brushed off the error, saying on Twitter: ''This is week 1 of 10. We will win next week.''

The tweet was interpreted as a bold guarantee of victory; one reporter compared it to Babe Ruth ''calling his shot.'' But Hamlin said he was actually just trying to put the mistake behind him and look forward.

''I feel like I can go win each and every one of them. Really it's nothing more than that,'' he said. ''People were just taking it a little further than that, but I'm racing - doing the best I can - and that's all I'm going to do.''

Hamlin has done pretty well in New Hampshire, winning in 2007 and finishing in the top three in four of the previous six races. In July, he led 150 laps but a miscommunication with crew chief Darian Grubb on the final pit stop over whether to change two tires or four left him mired him deep in traffic.

Still, he made his way back to the front of the field before finishing second to Kasey Kahne.

''He was really strong here in July,'' said Jimmie Johnson, who is second in the points race and starting 20th on Sunday. ''I've kind of put him down as the favorite.''

Hamlin, who was the fastest in practice Friday and again Saturday, will need a mistake-free run on Sunday to remain competitive in the Chase, especially heading into next week's race at Dover, Del. He has never finished better than fourth in 13 starts there, with more results in the bottom five than the top five.

''That's why Chicago was so disappointing, because we wanted to maintain or extend our lead there ... extend our lead here and then damage control at Dover,'' Hamlin said. ''I think it's tough from my aspect that I have one weak race track in the Chase, but that's just part of it. I hope to excel that much better on my personal race tracks.''

Jeff Gordon won the pole after barely qualifying for the Chase and then crashing with 80 laps to go in Chicago to finish 35th. He was the only one of the 12 Chase drivers who didn't finish in the top 18.

''I think we surprised ourselves a little bit with this pole. ... So, this was a big one. And, certainly, good timing,'' Gordon said. ''We've had a lot of problems that have been frustrating, and we've had to battle through them. But our cars have been really, really fast. So, that keeps your confidence as a driver in knowing that you can rebound.''

Kyle Busch, who is not in the Chase, will join Gordon on the front row. Other Chase competitors starting near the front include Tony Stewart (third), Kasey Kahne (sixth) and Martin Truex Jr. (ninth).

Points leader Keselowski, the Chicagoland winner, will start in the eighth row. Hamlin is the farthest back of the 12 drivers competing in the Chase after running in qualifying with race pressure in his tires.

''That was a tough one,'' he said. ''I knew something was really, really wrong because the car was bobbing down real bad. But, simple mistake. We'll rebound from it. We're quick enough. We'll get them, but that's frustrating.''
